It has been a few months since I've made anything. I guess you have to start again somewhere.

I thought the Mike bead from Monsters Inc turned out extra cute. I've seen previews that a second Monsters Inc is going to be released within the next year. I love the first movie and can't wait for the second one to get here. I just hope I can start making more beads on a continuous basis now, versus there being no time. Enjoy the beads....
However, I decided to finally be more productive and pulled out my sterling silver findings and swarovski crystals. I made the minnie mouse style bead and made this charm, which fits Pandora style necklaces and bracelets. I really enjoyed creating jewelry again, so it looks like there will be more things to come.
I have been seeing more and more protective phone cases decorated, so I thought I'd give it a try. I have so many swarovski flatback crystals and fun findings that I could see this getting very addictive. The type of non toxic clear coating I used ensures that none of the crystals or findings will be coming off. I am getting ready to create a fish scene on another phone case, this should be fun. I'll post it here once it is complete. After a few months of getting nothing but a brownish amber color, I was excited when I pulled this focal bead out of my kiln. Finally, colors!! My next goal is to make a complete set using this silver striking glass.
I Have a Bead In My Soup!!

It is getting very close for showtime for the Bead Soup Party, hosted by Lori Anderson(Pretty Things). On February 26, 2011, everyone who signed up will have their jewelry creations, made from their bead soup ingredients, on display. I was so excited last week having received my "Bead Soup" ingredients from my soup partner, StacyHartis(Sissy & Jack's). The color scheme she chose is magnificant and her custom made copper focal is stunning. I'm excited about turning this into a beautiful necklace and am flooded with ideas.

I intended to have the picture of the soup ingredients posted earlier and hope she can forgive me for the delay. I finally managed to send her the beads I made for her bead soup ingredient's. I kept changing my mind and finally just had to make a decision and go with it. The focal I created for her was a bit out of my comfort zone, but I still think it turned out ok.

Next time I post I will have a completed necklace, which will be in within the next few days. Wish me luck and Thank You Stacy for sending me such beautiful beads!!GlassMigrationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04157263100252669117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854209086600953708.post-5281551267909347052011-01-22T19:37:00.000-05:002011-01-22T19:37:25.750-05:00Fine Silver(.999) Drizzled Valentine Hearts

I have always loved these beads and of all the beads I have made in the past four years, this set is still one of my favorites. Something about the the etched rainbow colors, drizzled with Fine Silver (.999), has a beautiful effect. It was hard letting this set go when it sold, but I knew I could always make it again. That being said, it is a rarity for a lampwork artist to buy another lampwork artists' beads, but I was flattered when this happened with this set.

Even though I'm working with a better torch now, I still sometimes feel my beads were prettier when they were made with the less powerful torch, the Hothead torch. The HotHead torch was solely driven by propane, no oxygen involved, resulting in a cooler flame. A HotHead could mainly only melt the softer glass rods, COE104(Coefficient Expansion) and COE96. I have since upgraded to a BobCat torch. The BobCat torch creates a hotter flame since oxygen and propane are mixed at the surface of the torch. Since the BobCat torch burns a hotter flame, I am able to melt the soft glass as well as the harder glass, COE90(BullsEye) and COE33(Boro).

I intend to post about my studio in my next post, showing pictures of my studio setup and also all my different glass rods from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. I will show a couple of pictures here right now, for those who would like to see the glass in rod form, before being melted into beads.

I never thought in a million years I would be doing anything artistically related, especially in a profession, being the sole owner of my own glass studio. I graduated for East Carolina University with a 4-year degree in Business Education/Information Technology. I worked in the medical software field for a long time, as a software and technical analyst. Needless to say my life led me down an unexpected path, leading to my interest in making lampwork beads. I should have realized I was bound to show some type of artistic creativity in my life, being my parents are both natural artist's. It was kind of interesting having a father who double majored in Physics and Math, overseeing a nuclear powerplant, yet when he was home, he would paint some of the most amazing detailed shrimp boats I have ever seen. My mom was fluent with many art mediums; however, was most well known for her water color pictures. To this day, anything my mom touches turns into a beautiful work of art.

Since I have already written more in this post then I had originally intended, I better leave the rest for later, in regards to the set up of my glass studio. My fingers hurt from typing anyway, so until my next post............................. It is interesting how many different styles of penguins I have achieved over the past few years. I thought it would be fun to post them here in my blog, if for anything, for my own enjoyment.

The last time Raleigh, NC had any accumulation of snow on Christmas Day was 63 years ago, in the year 1947. I know it is no big deal for parts of the world that receive snow annually, but where we live, snow is not common, especially this time of year. In fact, we have gone many winters with no measureable amount of snow. It has been fun watching the kids build snowmen and sledding down the hills in the neighborhood.

However, we did have one sad but funny situation happen this morning. After it had been snowing all night, the kids bolted out the door at the first sign of light. They were playing around, taking advantage of the whole snow thing, when my daughter noticed something sticking out of the snow. She noticed it was moving a little bit so she ran to see what it was. Apparently some of our silkie chickens some how got stuck in the snow and the only thing you could see were their heads sticking out. Fortunately, we managed to save all 6 silkies that had gotten stuck.

It was sad when I first heard the news from my daughter; however, the sadness was immediately replaced once I saw these tiny little heads sticking out of the snow. I was laughing so hard it brought tears to my eyes. It was the funniest looking thing and I really wish I had brought my camera with me to capture the moment. Since my first reaction was to save my two legged babies, I never got those pictures. Next time I will make a mental note to put the chickens in their coop and lock the door behind me. I will also remember to always bring a camera out with me whenever it snows again, just in case I run across something as funny as today's event. Live and Learn!
I love gardening and growing flowers as much as I enjoy making lampwork beads. I like to take pictures of the flowers around my yard to inspire my bead art. I get all kinds of ideas for my beads as a result. Maybe other artists will find these pictures just as inspiring as I have.....
There is a link under these pictures if you would like to see all the pictures I have in my photo album of my flowers.
Wow!! It has been quite a while since I made flowers. There is so much small detail involved. I used to hate making flowers because they were so hard to encase. I guess practicing does pay off. I also added another bling set, BubbleGumBling. A couple of the sets have a bright bling to them. The other set has a couple of the dichroic beads in it, but also has the golden metallic effect applied to alot of the beads.
Because of my perfectionism, I have tossed so many beads out my studio window into the surrounding flower bed. I'll catch my mom on occasion, pilfering through the flower bed picking up my "reject beads". Next thing I find is her wearing them on her necklace. The funny part is I often question why I tossed alot of the beads once I see them strung on a piece of jewelry. Hopefully this year I will ease up on my perfectionism and produce more beads to sale. Better yet, maybe I will make all perfect beads and won't have to toss any more. Maybe one day.............
I have a couple other sets to add this weekend. It is just a matter of taking the pictures and posting them. It sounds so easy and yet finding the time to do all I have to get done is sometimes overwhelming. SIGH!!!!!
I have been told dichroic was originally developed by NASA. I have yet to actually look up exactly what it was used for by them, but that is on my list of "To Do's". The type of dichroic I am using is a newer application of the product. It is alot thicker and brighter then most other dichroic on the market. I have heard it referred to as "pure dichroic". Having used the older dichroic applications and now this newer type, I completely understand why they refer it as the "pure dichroic".

Hopefully this year will I will be able to push myself to make more beads and increase the market of my website. I will work hard and do my best; and hopefully, I will reap the benefits. Wish me luck......

When it came time to provide a title to represent my lampwork bead website, I wanted it to be more then just another title. Afterall, this title would be my website's initial introduction, representing my passion of creating lampwork art and where my imagination comes to life. With that in mind, I also had another interest that was just as important to me as making beads. I wanted to incorporate both of my interests in my title.

I am an animal lover at heart and four years ago, when I first saw the Lady Gouldian finch, I couldn't believe the vivid and bright colors this little bird displayed. I have always been drawn to colorful things and this little finch had the most beautiful colors. I also learned this type of finch has different color combinations based on its genetic makeup. That meant more beautiful colors and I instantly became a huge fan of the Lady Gouldian. I immediately began to research the Lady Gouldian, and soon after, I also became the owner of my own Lady Gouldian finches.

With my birds and glass in mind, deciding on the website title "GlassMigrations", actually did not take very long. Scientifically, molecules of glass must move, or migrate, from one location to another when melted to produce a bead. And of course, we all know most birds relocate, or migrate, during the cold seasons to a warmer climate. I felt the word "migration" within my title name would capture both aspects of my birds and glass. A simple idea, but it works for me.GlassMigrationshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04157263100252669117noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3854209086600953708.post-69687807126562425182009-12-21T12:56:00.003-05:002010-01-06T23:22:39.589-05:00The things children talk you into..........
